Dental care tip is something we hear about all the time. Some say you should use this type of toothpaste, some say you should avoid these kinds of drinks or foods so it’s natural that we get confused and are not sure what advice to follow. So we at Premiere Dental have come up with a list of 10 most important dental care tips that you should follow in order to achieve and maintain excellent dental health.
Dental care tip #1 – Brushing your teeth
This is practically a no-brainer. Brushing your teeth on a daily basis is one of the most effective ways to maintain good dental health, and thus prevent dental decay or cavities. Brushing your teeth regularly will help remove the bacteria that feed on the remains of your food, mucus and microscopic particles which form plaque. This plaque then forms cavities. So make sure that you brush your teeth at least twice a day to prevent plaque from forming and damaging your teeth.
Dental care tip #2 – Flossing
Many of you don’t think that flossing is important. Well it is! There only so much that your toothbrush can do for you. It can remove the food bits and plaque from your teeth, but it can’t reach in between your teeth and food gets stuck there too. That’s where the dental floss comes in. Dental floss can reach those difficult places in between your teeth and remove the food bits so your teeth can really remain clean.
Dental care tip #3 – Toothpaste
In order to prevent the formation of cavities, you need to make sure that you’re using the right kind of toothpaste. That’s why we at Premiere Dental recommend that you use toothpaste which contains fluoride. Fluoride found in toothpastes is really effective in preventing tooth decay. And with the addition of fluoride in your tap water, it’s a great way to strengthen your teeth.
Dental care tip #4 – Sugar
We all have oral bacteria in our mouth and there’s no way we can remove 100% of it. However, we can do something in order to prevent it from multiplying rapidly. Not sure if you knew, but bacteria multiply rapidly when they have access to sugar. So make sure that you minimize the intake of sugary foods and drinks.
Dental care tip #5 – Dental follow-ups
Most people only spot signs of tooth decay when it’s really serious. However, dentist are highly trained professionals that can spot tooth decay at an early stage and can act promptly in order to minimize the damage or repair it. Even though you might think that your teeth are 100% healthy, that is no excuse for not seeing your dentist at least twice a year, if for no other reason, then to simply check your teeth and see if everything is in order. Your dentist can do your routine checkup when you’re getting your teeth cleaned.
Dental care tip #6 – Diet
When it comes to dental care, it’s important to pay attention to your diet too. Dentist recommend eating vegetables and fruits because these foods increase your saliva production, which rinses your mouth and helps prevent formation of plaque. The same goes to other types of foods that require a lot of chewing.
Dental care tip #7 – Hydration
Just like eating healthy, drinking plenty of water throughout the day also has significant benefits to your dental health. Drinking water helps produce saliva and when your body is well hydrated it can produce saliva more easily.
Dental care tip #8 – Brushing your tongue
Your teeth are not the only place where bacteria form. Your tongue is also a pretty convenient place for them to spread. When you’re brushing your teeth, make sure to check your tongue too. If it appears to be white or yellowish, then you most likely forgot to brush or scrape it. Brushing your tongue with a toothbrush or scraping it with a tongue scraper can remove bacteria which is known for causing bad breath.
Dental care tip #9 – Chewing
Teeth can easily get damaged if you chew or hard candy or other non-food items like your fingernails, pen caps etc. So try avoiding that.
Dental care tip #10 – Your toothbrush
Your toothbrush is your first and number 1 tool for your good oral health. So make sure that you take good care of it. You don’t need to do some special cleaning treatments, but make sure that you dry it after every use and that you rinse is thoroughly after brushing your teeth, in order to remove any toothpaste remains. You also need to store it upright to have it exposed to air and make sure that you check it occasionally for signs of wear and tear. Dentist usually recommend changing toothbrushes twice a year, depending on the way you use it.
