Can Invisalign Improve Your Oral Health

Can Invisalign Improve Your Oral Health?

If you have misaligned or crooked teeth and you’re looking into getting braces, you’ve also probably heard about Invisalign. This is an innovative orthodontic treatment for misaligned teeth or bite issues but without the need of having traditional metal braces. This offers huge benefits to patients over traditional braces because they can eat whatever they want and they don’t need to change their entire teeth cleaning routine – they just brush like they normally do.

Our team provides tooth-colored dental fillings in Gilbert with a patient-first approach.

The main goal of Invisalign is to provide you with a perfectly aligned smile. But a beautiful smile also means a healthy smile. Not only will it boost your confidence and how you feel about your teeth, but it is also an effective way to improve your oral health.

Cleaner teeth

The first and most obvious reason why Invisalign can improve oral health is because you don’t need to have a new “cleaning routine” and you can keep them clean easier.

Navigating your toothbrush around the brackets, wires and the entire “infrastructure” of braces is time-consuming and you can never be sure that you cleaned them properly.

Unlike braces, Invisalign can be removed for cleaning. You just pop out the aligners and brush, floss and rinse your teeth like you normally do. Of course the aligners will have to be cleaned too, but that’s not too complicated either. You can ask our dentists on how best to clean them.

Lower risk of tooth decay and gum disease with Invisalign

It’s quite easy for debris and plaque to form on teeth that are crooked, misaligned and overlapping. These places are really hard to reach with a toothbrush.

The cracks might not be too deep, but they are deep enough for plaque to build up and cause tooth decay or even gum disease. These two conditions are usually more common with patients that have misaligned teeth. Once the plaque builds up and starts spreading onto the gum tissue, bacteria from the plaque can cause bleeding, irritation, infection and even tooth loss.

Without treatment, gum diseases can only get worse and patients can end up with gum recession, loss of supporting structure and tooth loss. So it would be best to try to avoid it or at least minimize the risk of gum disease.

Whole body health

You’ve probably heard that healthy teeth mean a good overall health. And that’s generally true. Gum disease that has advanced could cause other health issues. Patients that develop late stage gum disease are more prone to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease.  So with straighter and healthier teeth, you minimize these risks.
