Choosing the Right Toothbrush

Not many of us put a lot of thought into the toothbrush we’re using. However, the type of toothbrush you use can actually make a pretty big difference in your oral health. For example, did you know that if you use a brush where the bristles are too hard you can wear away the enamel on your teeth and cause sensitivity? It’s crazy to think about but, the finer details of your toothbrush are important to your overall oral health. So, here are a few tips for picking the right toothbrush for you.

Head Size

Whatever toothbrush you end up choosing, make sure the head of the toothbrush will fit comfortably into the smaller areas of your mouth. This will ensure all areas of your mouth are being reached and cleaned effectively. If possible, try getting a rounded head on your toothbrush as this shape usually fits into areas more seamlessly than other shapes.

Hard, Medium, or Soft?

If you’re a gentle person and don’t brush very hard, a hard or medium bristle is ok. However, more times than not, a soft-bristled toothbrush is the best option since overbrushing or rigorous brushing can cause damage to your teeth over time. Brushing too hard can cause the enamel to be worn away from your teeth which can cause sensitivity and other various oral health issues.

Ask Your Dentist

Your dentist is always over the moon to give you the best recommendations for your oral health. This includes suggesting a specific toothbrush or two that will match you just right. Since your dental professional knows a lot about your oral health and habits, they are the best source for information on the perfect toothbrush for you and your needs.

Electric or Manual

Many experts say that an electric toothbrush is a better choice overall. However, if you’re consistent with your oral health routine, an electric or manual toothbrush will both do the trick just fine. An electric toothbrush can be much pricier than a disposable one. If you prefer electric, that’s perfectly fine, just be sure to find the right one for you. Many times, the cheaper versions don’t always work the best and can be a pain. It’s not always guaranteed that a more expensive brush, whether disposable or electric, will be better. However, more times than not, it’s noticeable when you buy a cheap toothbrush in comparison to paying a few dollars more. Don’t forget that your oral health is worth it.

In the end, liking your toothbrush is the overall sign that it’s the one for you. If it’s comfortable, you enjoy the feel of it, the color, all the attributes, etc. then go for it. However, it’s always good to be aware of the benefits connected to the toothbrush you choose so, just keep those in mind.
