Dental implants myths debunked

Dental implants myths debunked

If you’re missing a few teeth, then your dentist will recommend to opt in for dental implants. And they are the best solution for this problem. However, many people hear different stories and myths about implants which make them hesitant. But before making a decision, you should check the facts and information. So what are the most common myths around dental implant?

Dental implants don’t look natural

This is probably the most common myth and assumption. Just because something isn’t a natural tooth, doesn’t mean that it can’t (and won’t) look like one. Most people can’t tell the difference between a natural tooth and a dental implant. Of course if the implant is done correctly.

Dental crowns that are placed over an implant are custom-made for every patient so that it matches the color and look to your natural teeth. So once the crown is placed on the implant, it’s really hard (almost impossible) for the untrained eye to tell the difference.

Of course looks aren’t the only thing we take into consideration. We also think about the functionality, aesthetics and comfort of our patients.

The procedure is painful

This is yet another myth that has no merits. Patients might experience some pressure during the procedure but there’s no pain since the area where the implant is being placed is numbed. For patients that area also anxious before the procedure dentists can also administer some Nitrous Oxide to help them relax.

Dental implants are expensive

Look at dental implants as an investment that will replace your missing teeth and avoid having dentures. There are more affordable options such as crowns and bridges, which can also be tooth replacement alternatives, but they usually last between 7 and 10 years. On the other hand, dental implants last a lot longer.

Dentures can wobble and you won’t be able to chew with your front teeth. In time they can become lose and won’t be as effective and sturdy as implants. Patients that got implants many years ago still have them and they look great.

Dental implants can be done by ANY dentist

Generally speaking, any dentist can place a dental implant. But if you want to a great aesthetic outcome then your dental implants have to be done by an experienced and skilled dentist or implantologist. Dentist at Premiere Family Dental Care have extensive experience with dental implants.

Not many patients are suitable for dental implants

This is another false myth. In fact, there are very few people that cannot have implants due to some health concerns. The rest can get them without any problems.

If you don’t have enough bone for the implants, we can use different methods for bone grafting in order to provide sufficient support and stability for your implants.

They aren’t safe

Not many people know, but dental implants have a 98% of success rate and that is considered to be the highest success rate among all dental procedures. Of course, as with all surgical procedure, there is some risk of failure, but we avoid that by carefully assessing the risks for every patient and devise a plant that will provide the best result for our patient.

Dental implants furthermore prevent bone loss, restore your ability for chewing which in the end improve your overall health.
